The People We Work With
India’s textile business is one of the oldest industries in the Indian economy dating back several centuries. Father and son, Ravi and Venkat run our charming textile studio in Karur, Southern India where we have been working for more than 10 years. Now in its 3rd generation, this family-run factory is managed by Venkat who joined his father 5 years ago. Ravi, though still involved in the business, has taken over as president of the charitable lions club in the region, a very prestigious assignment.
Venkat’s delightful sister has now joined the family working at the studio and his elder sister Sowbi often drops in with her adorable baby daughter!

Bringing Our Designs to Life
It takes tremendous skill to bring our designs to life; every shape is cut out by hand and the free-hand embroidery is done mostly by eye. The accuracy of our craftspeople's work is truly astounding. To make quilts, our needleworkers and embroidery artists often sew in little groups, seated on top of the fabric. It’s a very sociable way to work.
In Southern India, work, family and religion are all seamlessly interwoven which is something to admire and reinforces the sense that the factory really is one big caring family. Every Friday evening there is a small ceremony in the factory to thank the gods for looking after them.

Traditional Techniques
Mr Ravi and his delightful family have shown us entirely traditional expert techniques to help create our unique quilts, cushions and fabrics. We have worked together for so long now, they understand everything about our designs and have become a real asset during the origination process.
Venkat has developed a great eye for colour too, which helps keep print and yarn colours consistent; he is a master weaver who embraces new designs, it is a pleasure working with him.
